Winter Weather Update 4PM Wednesday.

SNOW OVER.
WINTER STORM WARNING CANCELLED.
WIND CHILL ADVISORY THROUGH WED NIGHT.

After generally less than 2″ of frozen stuff, the precip is over.
It also appears our overall weather pattern will be changing for much warmer weather this weekend.

Although temperatures struggled back into the 20′s this afternoon,
wind chills will remain dangerously low through the night.
Keep all exposed pipes protected and be very careful with space heaters, conserving as much energy as you can safely.
No one wants to be forced out into the cold by a fire tonight!

WINTER WEATHER UPDATE 6:15A WED.

WINTER STORM WARNING CONTINUES THROUGH 6P WED.
What we hope is the heaviest, most solid line of freezing rain/sleet/snow is moving through the DFW Metro area between 6 and 8 AM.
After that, expect periods of light to moderate snow, accumulating to 1-3″ in the DFW area with heavier amounts between Denton and the Oklahoma border.
Wind chills are already near zero and falling.
Actual overnight lows between 10 and 15 above tonight.
Today, Winter Storm Warning 20′s/12
Thursday, Clearing, 30/15
Friday, Partly Cloudy, 48
Saturday, Sunny, 56
Sunday, Windy, 66

WINTER STORM WARNING: ICING MOVING IN AT 3AM

Icing conditions observed in Fort Worth at 3AM.
Cold front plunging rapidly through DFW Airport at 3:30A.
Winter storm warning through 6P for 1-3″ combined accumulation of freezing rain, sleet and snow.
Temps falling through 20′s to lower teens tonight.
Prepare for power outages in strong gusty winds and enough ice and wet snow to threaten tree limbs and some power lines.
Conserve electricity and protect exposed plumbing.

Winter Weather Forecast: Final Fix

The local forecast has remained stable through the day which gives us more confidence of the sequence, timing and severity of the coming winter storm.
We expect rain to begin moving in from the Northwest about Midnight.
North winds will begin to cool temperatures to near freezing between 3A and 5A.
Freezing temperatures should be reached between 5A in Fort Worth and 7A in Dallas.
1-3″ of freezing rain, sleet and snow is likely across the Metro DFW area with more snow (3-6″) North and more icing South of I-20.
Unlike last Friday’s record snow, we expect icing and heavier, wet snow to weigh down tree limbs and possibly contribute to scattered power outages Wednesday.
Bitter North winds will drive temperatures down through the 20′s Wednesday to lows between 12 and 15 degrees Thursday morning.
Please prepare for all contingencies.
At least we’ll warm up sooner..by Friday.

Tuesday, Feb. 8 Forecast Update: WINTER STORM WARNING DFW WEDNESDAY

The next outbreak of winter weather could mean trouble for tree limbs and power lines.
The National Weather Service has posted everything from the OK border southward to Cleburne and Ennis and from Cisco eastward to Canton under a Winter Storm Warning for accumulations of freezing rain, sleet and snow between 12A and 6P Wednesday.
Today, Mostly Sunny, 55/32
Wednesday, Mixed Precip 1-3″ Windy, 20′s/15
Thursday, Clearing, 32/20
Friday, Sunny, 45
Saturday, Mostly Sunny, 55
Keep checking back for updates on the weather forecast on this blog.

Monday Feb. 7 Forecast Update

Winter weather on Wednesday.
A mix of snow, ice and Arctic air will descend on North Texas Wednesday. But the precip should end Wednesday night and temperatures should rebound above freezing by Friday if not late Thursday.
Today, Sunny, 43/28
Tuesday, Increasing Clouds, 52/26
Wednesday, Ice, Snow, 26/15
Thursday, Clearing, 32
Friday, Sunny, 50

Weekend Forecast Update Saturday, Feb. 5

There is a possibility of more freezing rain and snow Sunday.
The game-changer was Friday’s record snow of 3-6″ across North Texas.
We forecasters were already expecting a new cold front on Super Bowl Sunday and had been lowering the high temperature forecast almost daily. But until yesterday, it appeared the cold front would come through with very little of its own moisture, leaving us with some clouds and gusty winds- nothing more.
Now that we have a snow-pack on the ground- melting and evaporating all day Saturday, it appears our local atmosphere will have enough moisture already present for freezing fog early Sunday morning and at least some mixed precip Sunday midday with a high of only 38 degrees. There is a chance of leftover ice on bridges and overpasses Monday morning.
We also expect a new chance of wintry weather next Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.

WINTER WEATHER UPDATE 9A Friday 2-4

One last band of moderate snowfall is spreading through the DFW area at mid-morning.
The Winter Storm Warning for DFW will expire at Noon.
We’ll remain mostly cloudy through 3PM, reaching a high in the mid 20′s.
Clearing and 18 tonight.
Highs will be in the 40′s Saturday and Sunday, although Sunday evening will be blustery and turning colder again.

WINTER WEATHER UPDATE 5:15A Friday 2-4

Snow has been falling overnight from Central into North Texas.
Accumulations have been 1-3″ in Parker, Johnson and Tarrant Counties.
Accumulations have been much heavier 3-6″ or more in Denton, Collin, Dallas, Kaufman and Rockwall Counties.
For once, our cold weather turned out to be a blessing.
The cold air resulted in a dry powdery snowfall that has not accumulated too rapidly on the tree limbs, leaving nearby power lines alone.
Traffic will be a nightmare this morning, but at least there are no significant weather-related power outages in North Texas as of now.
Today, Snow Ending, 27/20
Saturday, Partly Cloudy, 41/28
Sunday, Partly Cloudy, 48
Monday, Mostly Cloudy, 45

WINTER WEATHER UPDATE 9P Thursday.

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY now extended into DFW area from northern Hill Country.
1-3″ of snow possible tomorrow AM.

NEW Winter Weather Possibilities Thu night- Fri morning.

It’s true that the DFW is not technically under a Winter Weather Advisory that stops at Hill, Ellis and Kaufman Counties just Southeast of the Metroplex. But…
We are still pretty sure to get 1/2″ to 1″ of snow between 10P Thursday and 10A Friday.
If the mid-level storm system approaching South Texas from Mexico pulls any more moisture out of the Gulf and/or tracks even slightly farther north of its current forecast track, we could easily see 1.5″ to 2″ of snow in the DFW area.
Half an inch of snow is usually no big deal here.
An inch and a half is a much bigger deal.
Be ready for anything tomorrow morning.
And thanks again for conserving energy as much as possible. Today’s gone a lot better for most of us.

WINTER WEATHER UPDATE 9A Thursday 2-3

Even though we’re nearly as cold now as we were yesterday morning, we’re seeing far fewer power outages. Nice work, everyone!
Our high today will be just 23 and we’re expecting mid-teens tonight with an inch of snow possible across North Texas, ending tomorrow with a high of 28.
We’ll finally start warming up a little on Saturday, after probably 100+ hours of sub-freezing temperatures.
Looking ahead, we’re watching a few new chances of wintry weather approaching next week- just a heads-up.

WINTER WEATHER UPDATE Thursday, Feb 3

Thanks to a thin blanket of clouds overnight, temperatures did not fall as much as we feared they might. Early morning temps are bottoming out in the low to mid teens before daybreak Thursday.
Today, Cloudy, Breezy, 23
Tonight, LIGHT SNOW <1" 16
Friday, SNOW ENDING, 28/22
Saturday, Mostly Sunny, 46/30
Sunday, PtCloudy, Windy, 48
Please continue to conserve power safely while we're still unusually cold. Thanks!

WINTER WEATHER UPDATE 10:30A Wednesday

Rotating blackouts will continue to affect virtually all homes and businesses, with the exception of emergency services, hospitals and nursing homes.
It is important for YOU to conserve as much power as you can NOW.
Several generating plants around the state have been shut down due to technical problems from the ice and cold.
When your power goes off, turn off everything but a couple lamps or lights to prevent a power surge when the electricity comes back on.
And don’t forget to cover your pool equipment and wrap exposed pipes, because they can freeze in just 15-20 minutes!

WINTER WEATHER/POWER OUTAGE UPDATE:

Cover your pool equipment as soon as possible. Normally, our swimming pool pumps run constantly on ‘freeze-guard’ when the water falls below 40 degrees. But today, a series of 15-20 minute power outages could cause your exposed pipes to freeze! Cover your pool equipment and wrap insulation around those exposed pipes.

WINTER WEATHER UPDATE 9A Wed POWER OUTAGES

Oncor advises most planned rotating power outages today will last between 5 and 15 minutes, but some may last longer, up to 45 minutes.
These rolling outages occur when the electric utilities in Texas get close to exhausting their reserve power-generating capacity.
Some plants fired by natural gas may have trouble keeping up in the extreme cold.
TIP: When your power goes off, try to turn off everything you can except a couple small lights that tell you when the power’s back on.
That way, you can avoid power surges that can cause damage to sensitive electrical equipment..and cause additional blackouts further down the line.
Thanks again for your patience.
