An upper-level storm system near El Paso today will spread lift and moisture across much of the state. Conditions will be right for minor accumulating snows of 1″ generally west of Fort Worth. The DFW Metro area could see a few flurries mixed in with light rain this afternoon through Christmas morning. Christmas Day and Monday could have additional rains as the parent upper-level system tracks slowly across North Texas. If you are traveling west of Wichita Falls or Abilene, prepare for winter weather. In areas expecting snow today and tonight, the three-dimensional temperature forecast-profile favors rain mixed with snow grains and flakes, not ice. If conditions change unexpectedly in the next 12-24 hours and freezing rain or ice become the dominant precipitation-types, we may have more than travel problems to contend with.

DFW IS AT RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS MONDAY AFTERNOON:
A strong upper level storm system near El Paso this morning will speed toward Amarillo and Wichita within the next 24 hours. As it cuts across the northwest third of the state, it will encounter a relatively warm and moist atmosphere with surface features such as a dryline and trailing Pacific cold front. Combined, these features will ignite one or possibly two lines of strong to severe thunderstorms in Central and North Texas this afternoon. Prepare for power outages due to lightning, gusty winds of 40-50 mph and possibly small brief tornadoes on the leading edge of squall lines.
